Support Groups

 

For Friends and Families
The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County provides supportive group counseling services to friends and relatives of persons with mental illness (ROMI). The groups are facilitated by trained professionals or by persons who have an intimate knowledge of the subject matter and knowledge of group facilitation techniques. The groups typically meet weekly for two hours. The focus of the group is on mutual support; and includes discussion of topics such as sharing of similar experiences, problems in accessing services, stigma, benefits and entitlements, advocacy issues, etc.

Smithtown: Thursday at 7 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, Rt. 111 & Main St.
Huntington: Tuesday at 7 p.m., Family Service League, 790 Park Avenue
Riverhead: Tuesday at 7 p.m., Riverhead Mental Health Center

Parents GrouP:6 Week Sessions
The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County provides supportive group counseling ansd psycho-education services to parents and guardians of adolescents and teens diagnosed with mental illness. The group is facilitated by a trained professional. The group typically meets weekly for two hours for six weeks. The focus of the program is on mutual support, and includes discussion of topics such as understanding a new diagnosis, how to negotiate your way around the "system", sharing similar experiences, problems in accessing services, stigma, benefits and entitlements, advocacy issues, etc.

Support Groups For Individuals Diagnosed with a Mental Illness

The MHAS also provides group support to individuals diagnosed with mental illness. The topics of these groups include Mood Disorder, Anxiety and Panic Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The groups are facilitated by trained professionals or by persons who have an intimate knowledge of the subject matter and knowledge of group facilitation techniques. The groups meet weekly or biweekly for two-hours. The focus of the program is on mutual support; and includes topics such as sharing of similar experiences, problems in accessing services, medication, stigma, benefits and entitlements, advocacy issues, etc.

Anxiety & Panic Disorder Meets

Lindenhurst: Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Mental Health Association in Suffolk

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Meets

Lindenhurst: Monday at 7:30 p.m. Mental Health Association in Suffolk (First and third Monday)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Riverhead: Monday at 5:30 p.m. Synergy Center, 1380 Roanoke Ave.

Mentally Ill and Chemical Abuse Group (Dually Diagnosed)
