The anti-stigma campaign responds to television, newspaper, radio broadcasts, magazine articles, movies, and events that discredit and/or humiliate persons living with mental illness. MHAS will become involved when institutional or corporate stigma arises in the workplace in an effort to resolve the problem. The mission of the program is to educate and advocate towards an accurate public view of mental illness and of persons living with mental illness. The goals of this program are accomplished through educational material/links listed on our website; as well as through links to current government legislation. MHAS staff will act to mobilize the community to become involved in telephone and letter writing campaigns calling for the removal or discontinuation of stigmatizing images. In addition, MHAS staff participates in committees and coalitions working to reduce stigma.
If you read, see or hear a message that portrays mental illness in a stereotypical or inaccurate way, please let us know by calling our office at (631) 226-3900.
Long Island Festival and Walk for Mental Health - MHAS serves as a co-chair and is an active participant in the annual "Walk for Mental Health", an event aimed to educate and empower.
