Anger Management

The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Inc. (MHAS) offers an Anger Management Program aimed to help participants ages eighteen and older learn to manage their responses to angry feelings in an effective and healthy way. MHAS accomplishes this goal by providing classes facilitated by professional staff members who hold a Certificate as a Level 1 Certified Anger Management Specialist from the National Anger Management Association (NAMA).

Classes are formatted to run over twelve sessions (that may take place over the course of four to twelve weeks, with each class running 1 1/2-3 hours) or for three Saturdays of intensive training (taking place on three consecutive Saturdays for 4-6 hours per session).  Students are assigned homework and are expected to participate during class sessions. Students can expect to learn how to manage anger effectively, positive coping skills and relaxation techniques. Students also gain insight into how the brain affects our anger responses, goal setting, and how to use an anger log to break the anger cycle response. Participants will be provided with a workbook as part of the class fee.

Prospective students must call to register for themselves and complete a telephone screening. After the initial telephone screening, eligible participants will be scheduled for an intake in our office. The intake fee is non-refundable. Please call our offices for a schedule of our current fees and our refund policy.

For some applicants, recognition that their anger may hurt their relationships, their job or other significant parts of their life may lead the person to seek help. Other participants have been ordered to participate in an anger management class by the courts, probation, CPS or by an employer.  We welcome the participation of both mandated and non-mandated students. MHAS will provide students with a certificate of completion and documentation of their participation in our classes.

Acceptance into the class is based on the intake coordinator's judgment, an assessment of the applicants' willingness to take responsibility for their feelings and actions resulting from their anger and having a sense of the 'cost' or consequences of acting out in anger. The intake coordinator will also assess the applicants' potential to adhere to and maintain the Class Rules of Conduct.
