Advocacy

The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Inc. provides a mechanism for individual and system advocacy. Individual advocacy assists recipients in protecting and promoting their rights, resolving complaints and grievances, and in accessing appropriate services of their choice. Systems advocacy represents the concerns of a class of recipients by identifying patterns of failures or problems within a program or system. MHAS staff works to resolve these problems by targeting a change at the systems level. In order to effectively advocate for oneself, one must be well informed.

Website Based Advocacy- The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County establishes and maintains a website with the goal to allow consumers, family members and the community, easy access to crucial information regarding advocacy issues and concern, as well as information for accessing mental health services throughout Suffolk County.

The goal of the program is to allow consumers and families to have vital information accessible to them, so that they may be aware of their choices. The aim is to build the consumer and family movement, so that as persons with mental illness and their families become aware of the issues facing the community, they can have an increasing voice on both the local and nation levels of government.
