As we continue to mourn the tragic and violent event that occurred in Newton, Connecticut, and other acts of gun violence, and search for solutions, we recognize and appreciate Governor Cuomo's immediate and decisive action to prevent future events of this nature from becoming a reality.
The MHA has concerns over unintended consequences that may result under the provisions of Governor Cuomo’s Safe Act. Specifically, there is strong, stigmatizing notions about people with mental health challenges. Stigma is often cited as a reason why people do not seek help for mental health concerns. Research supports the fact that people with psychiatric disabilities are no more violent than the general public; such mis-characterization may hinder some individuals, regardless of whether or not they own a firearm, from seeking help should they have thoughts of suicide or harming someone else because of fear associated with being reported to authorities.
